Abandoned - Hamilton Banker

Our road trip to Colliers did not disappoint. We're always on the hunt for abandoned, but view-able, sites - and this is one of them.  Here is the shipwrecked Hamilton Banker. It can be seen docked in Colliers, lopsided, and sitting on rocks in a shallow area. There is no hiking required, and you can drive your car right up to the boat itself. Colliers is about a 50 min drive from St. John's.

This is my picture from last year's visit:

This is a ship that sunk and was re-floated in June 2006. According to CBC, "The Hamilton Banker was built in Norway in 1977, and was refurbished in Newfoundland in 1987. It has been owned by a number of companies over the years, most recently by a consortium that includes a Labrador Inuit organization."

We viewed the Hamilton Banker from a safe distance (note: I have a tendency to fall into shallow bodies of water).  You can walk right up next to the ship and see that it is heavily damaged from fire and sinking.

When we, my husband and I, view abandoned places we try to do so with care - both for our own well-being and with the intention of causing no further damage to the site. So, if your visiting the Hamilton Banker, take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints.

  1. I loved this find, I was so surprised to find such a good looking vessel in such hard shape.

    1. Seeing the fire damage is what blew my mind. Because, by the looks of the boat in the picture, you would never say that there was a fire.

    1. I think the road is called Dock Rd (just off Harbour Dr.) in Colliers. It's in the ocean, leaning up to a rocky dock. It may be slightly hidden from view on Harbour Dr. by the fishing storage building. Sci-Fi on the Rock

Hi folks, Last weekend myself and Mandi attended, and hosted an event and panel at this years Sci-Fi on the Rock  for our Welcome to Deadhouse  Goosebumps book club ( #GBCGhostNextDoor on Twitter). This adventure all started with suggestions from our spouses. So, we came up with a few ideas, went through the application process and waited. We are new to the event and panelist, and our YouTube book club is under a year old - so we figured that we didn't have much of a shot of being accepted.  Then the email came. We were accepted as panelist. For both ideas that we submitted.  Oh snap! Oh snap! OH SNAP! Planning the panels was super fun.  We love the Goosebumps series and we were able to create a plan that we were both happy with.  The "Reader Beware, You Choose the Scare!" event was first - it was the first evening of the event, and scheduled to be 2 hours long. Here we read through the Diary of the Mad Mummy, and backtracked 4 times to get 4 diff...

October Staycation

This past week my hubby and I had a staycation.  We love Fall - and it's for this reason that we always take a week or so off to enjoy it. During our week off we gorged on Little Caesars Stuffed Crazy Bread and Cinnamon rolls (nom nom nom carbs lol). Purchased a few new aquarium inhabitants, including 3 snails, 3 Odessa Barbs, 3 Skirt Tailed Tetra Glowfish, and a Kheli Loach. So far, one of the Tinfoil Barbs has tried to immediately pick up and eat the loach, and tried to pull a snail off the glass of the aquarium. We are doing fish counts daily until the Tinfoil Barbs lose interest. We also took a drive through Swift Current to Marystown to do some sightseeing. Along this route are a few lookouts.  We did stop at one of them, however, the binoculars that were stationed here were broken (maybe sandblasted by the wind sweeping over the area?)   There seems like there is nothing special about this area.  But, this is the only area of thi...

Maternity Leave - thus far

Life with a newborn is busy, but honestly - I thought that I would be busier. The weather this Fall has been amazing! It's making is easier to get out with the little guy - walking, shopping, playgroup and movies. There is so much to do and it's how I break up the days. We're grateful that there is a family resource center close by that has free drop-in activities for infants, toddlers and up. Meeting new moms who have a little one close to the age of mine is fantastic. Aside from socializing with other adults (which you miss when not going to work daily), you get to ask questions, share experiences, and get to know people that you may be seeing throughout the school year when the littles are older.  And, our movie theater has baby and parent movies every week. There are two new movie offerings each Wednesday morning, and the movie starts at a decent time - which allows time to get me and the little ready for the day and out the door.  Maternity leave here in Ca...
