The 200th Royal St. John's Regatta

The races were 'A Go!' for the 200th Royal St. John's Regatta - and we weren't going to miss the action.

(from @StJohnsRegatta on Twitter)

Although, truth be told, we are not going with the intention to watch many of the races.  We go for the food, the games of chance, and the time spent with friends and family. This year, like the year before it, and the year before that, hubby checked out the Hindu Temple tent for his lunch - and he was not disappointed. I had a feed of chicken pierogi (not pictured because I ate most of the dish before thinking of getting a pic for my blog).

I did, however, remember to get a pic of us before the heat of the day sunk in.

I don't think that I have even been to the St. John's Regatta on a day like this before.  It was hot!  Like, reapply the sun screen and still get sun burned hot. Usually, on Regatta day we have mild temps, and sometimes a little rain.  Some years it is far too windy for the races and the event is rescheduled. This year I would have rain danced my little heart out for a little cloud cover (ha ha ha).

The history of the St. John's Regatta can be found here. Each year, on the first Wednesday of August the (almost) entire city of St. John's closes down for business. It's a day that we look forward to all year round - not just because of the paid day off work, but because we enjoy venturing down to the pond to take in the excitement (and the food - did I mention the food?)

This is the view of one side of the pond from the other side.  There could not have been a better day for the races.  And, this is true because the M5 women's team broke a rowing record.  Go M5! The Avalon Dragons were also set up in the beer tent for donations.  Mom is a part of this group and I bet  the volunteer's work didn't go in vein on this sunny day.  The beer tent was on wheels all day.  When the totals are released they will be posted on their website. Fingers crossed that they did well again this year :D

Like most years, I didn't have any luck with the games of chance with any of the tickets that I bought.  Apparently the trick is for my Mother-in-Law to buy tickets and hand them to me.  Out of this exchange I won a small gift for one of my nephews (as that was the goal of winning) and a popcorn maker for us (when their bag was full). My hubby also won two prizes for the boys, and my Mother-in-Law also won a action figure set for her grandsons. They made out with a full bag of new toys to play with. We didn't forget our Lab at home either - they were giving out bright red Frisbees. Now we can play in the back yard again with a toy that we can actually see against the grass.

That's all for now.

Later Days,
Jen

Sci-Fi on the Rock

Hi folks, Last weekend myself and Mandi attended, and hosted an event and panel at this years Sci-Fi on the Rock  for our Welcome to Deadhouse  Goosebumps book club ( #GBCGhostNextDoor on Twitter). This adventure all started with suggestions from our spouses. So, we came up with a few ideas, went through the application process and waited. We are new to the event and panelist, and our YouTube book club is under a year old - so we figured that we didn't have much of a shot of being accepted.  Then the email came. We were accepted as panelist. For both ideas that we submitted.  Oh snap! Oh snap! OH SNAP! Planning the panels was super fun.  We love the Goosebumps series and we were able to create a plan that we were both happy with.  The "Reader Beware, You Choose the Scare!" event was first - it was the first evening of the event, and scheduled to be 2 hours long. Here we read through the Diary of the Mad Mummy, and backtracked 4 times to get 4 diff...

October Staycation

This past week my hubby and I had a staycation.  We love Fall - and it's for this reason that we always take a week or so off to enjoy it. During our week off we gorged on Little Caesars Stuffed Crazy Bread and Cinnamon rolls (nom nom nom carbs lol). Purchased a few new aquarium inhabitants, including 3 snails, 3 Odessa Barbs, 3 Skirt Tailed Tetra Glowfish, and a Kheli Loach. So far, one of the Tinfoil Barbs has tried to immediately pick up and eat the loach, and tried to pull a snail off the glass of the aquarium. We are doing fish counts daily until the Tinfoil Barbs lose interest. We also took a drive through Swift Current to Marystown to do some sightseeing. Along this route are a few lookouts.  We did stop at one of them, however, the binoculars that were stationed here were broken (maybe sandblasted by the wind sweeping over the area?)   There seems like there is nothing special about this area.  But, this is the only area of thi...

Maternity Leave - thus far

Life with a newborn is busy, but honestly - I thought that I would be busier. The weather this Fall has been amazing! It's making is easier to get out with the little guy - walking, shopping, playgroup and movies. There is so much to do and it's how I break up the days. We're grateful that there is a family resource center close by that has free drop-in activities for infants, toddlers and up. Meeting new moms who have a little one close to the age of mine is fantastic. Aside from socializing with other adults (which you miss when not going to work daily), you get to ask questions, share experiences, and get to know people that you may be seeing throughout the school year when the littles are older.  And, our movie theater has baby and parent movies every week. There are two new movie offerings each Wednesday morning, and the movie starts at a decent time - which allows time to get me and the little ready for the day and out the door.  Maternity leave here in Ca...
