This. This is an AMAZING site to see. There is a poorly marked hike up the side of a mountain to get to the plane crash - but it is well worth it. Pictured here is the memorial for the lives lost when this plane crashed.
Here is a link for more information. This is the FIRST crash of stormy March day.
I first found out about the Burgoynes Cove plane crash about 10 years ago. It was featured in a copy of the local newspaper (The Telegram - online article is no longer available), that was sitting on the lunchroom table. I nabbed the article for future use - because this was something that I needed to see and I knew that my hubby would be totally interested in a hike like this.
The cockpit was burned into aluminum ash and is not present to view. But, you can see where it hit further into the woods, and that area has been reclaimed by Mother Nature. The rest of the plane - the cabin, wings, electrical panels, and wheels are all view-able and in amazing condition (VERY little graffiti). You would never say that this plane has been there, crashed into the side of the mountain, for decades.

We have ventured up to this crash site twice, the second time with family from the mainland in tow, and the plane still looks the same. Talk about seeing the non-traditional historical sites! They were pretty interested in the plane debris, the monument, and the overall view from the mountain.
Directions for this hike can be found online, and I can help with finding the site as well. Venturing to this hike does mean that you will be driving up an old woods road, quite a distance from civilization.

Pictured here is from our most recent hike up to the plane. This is the wing that I'm sitting on in the picture above (which was 8 years ago).
Later Days,
Jen

Amazing, seems like if time just stood still there, not only because of the condition of the wreck, but also because of the forest around it.
ReplyDelete... and black bears! O.o
Nice Blog, keep it up!
That's exactly the feeling too - that time has stood still since the crash!
